A man was walking on the beach. He noticed a child picking up small objects and throwing them into the ocean. As the man got closer to the child, he asked, “May I ask what you are doing?” The young child replied, “I’m throwing starfish back into the ocean.” The man asked with some confusion, “Why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?”
The young child responded, “The tide is going out. If I don’t throw them back in, they will soon die.” The man gazed down the shoreline at what appeared to be thousands of starfish and said, “But young child, look at all the starfish. You can’t possibly make a difference.”
At this point, the young child leaned over, picked up another starfish, and confidently threw it into the ocean. As the starfish entered the water, the young child said, “It made a difference for that one.”
